Indications
Mécanisme d'action
Non-absorbed cation exchange polymer with a calcium-sorbitol counterion. It binds potassium in the GI lumen, increasing fecal potassium excretion and lowering serum potassium.
Posologie adulte habituelle (résumé de la notice)
Hyperkalemia: starting dose 8.4 grams orally once daily; increase in increments of 8.4 grams at 1-week or longer intervals based on serum potassium; maximum 25.2 grams once daily
Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Safe Not absorbed from the gut, so maternal use is not expected to expose the fetus. Can be used when needed to treat high potassium.
- Allaitement
- Safe Not absorbed by the mother, so it does not reach breast milk. LactMed: no special precautions are needed while breastfeeding.
Effets indésirables signalés
- Constipation
- Hypomagnesemia
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Flatulence
Contre-indications
- History of hypersensitivity reaction to Veltassa or any of its components
Précautions particulières
- Avoid in severe constipation, bowel obstruction or impaction, including abnormal post-operative bowel motility disorders; may be ineffective and may worsen GI conditions.
- Binds magnesium in the colon and can cause hypomagnesemia; monitor serum magnesium and consider supplementation if low.
- Not for emergency treatment of life-threatening hyperkalemia because of delayed onset of action.
Informez votre pharmacien ou votre médecin en cas de grossesse ou d'allaitement, de maladie rénale ou hépatique, d'allergies, ainsi que de tout autre médicament ou complément que vous prenez.
