- Effient can cause significant, sometimes fatal, bleeding. Do not use in patients with active pathological bleeding or a history of TIA or stroke. In patients ≥75 years it is generally not recommended, except in high-risk patients (diabetes or prior MI). Do not start in patients likely to undergo urgent CABG; when possible discontinue at least 7 days before any surgery. Other bleeding risk factors: body weight <60 kg, propensity to bleed, and concomitant medications that increase bleeding risk.
