Összefoglaló
Vitamin C mobilizes storage iron and makes more of it available for chelation by deferoxamine, increasing iron excretion. In iron-overloaded patients, especially with cardiac disease, high-dose vitamin C has been linked to cardiac decompensation and arrhythmia.
Mit jelent ez a kölcsönhatás közérthetően
Ascorbic acid and Deferoxamine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Miért jön létre
Ascorbic acid increases the pool of chelatable iron, and the redox-active iron released may cause cardiac toxicity.
Teendő
Avoid ascorbic acid in patients with cardiac dysfunction on deferoxamine. If used in others, start only after deferoxamine is established, keep doses low and give it with the infusion, with cardiac monitoring.
Mit kérdezzen a gyógyszerészétől
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
