Both drugs constrict blood vessels, and the systemic absorption of intranasal dihydroergotamine is sufficient for additive prolonged vasospasm with risk of coronary or peripheral ischemia. Labeling prohibits use of triptans and ergot derivatives within 24 hours of each other.

Dihydroergotamine intranasal and Sumatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Additive vasoconstriction via 5-HT1B/1D agonism by sumatriptan and serotonergic and adrenergic vasoconstriction by dihydroergotamine.
