Összefoglaló

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate binds cations in the gut including magnesium, and can cause hypomagnesemia. Magnesium-containing laxatives may also bind to the resin and, with non-absorbable cation exchangers, have been associated with metabolic alkalosis because the resin's buffering of bicarbonate is reduced.

Mit jelent ez a kölcsönhatás közérthetően

Magnesium citrate and Sodium polystyrene sulfonate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Magnesium citrate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Sodium polystyrene sulfonate belongs to Miscellaneous.

Bizonyítékszint: Moderate

Miért jön létre

Cation exchange resin binds magnesium in the gut, and binding of magnesium reduces neutralization of bicarbonate, which can lead to systemic alkalosis.

Teendő

Avoid giving magnesium-containing laxatives or antacids with the resin, and separate other oral drugs by at least 3 hours. Monitor serum electrolytes and acid-base status during therapy.
