Sintesi
Systemic corticosteroids such as cortisone raise blood glucose and can offset the glucose-lowering effect of acarbose. Patients with diabetes may experience worsened glycemic control, particularly with prolonged or higher-dose corticosteroid courses.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Acarbose and Cortisone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Perché avviene
Corticosteroids increase hepatic gluconeogenesis and cause peripheral insulin resistance, opposing the antihyperglycemic action of acarbose.
Cosa fare
Monitor blood glucose more frequently when starting, increasing or stopping cortisone, and adjust the antidiabetic regimen as needed. Reduce doses again when the corticosteroid is tapered to avoid hypoglycemia.
Cosa chiedere al farmacista
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
