Sintesi

Calcium acetate, used as a phosphate binder, can reduce the absorption of oral iron when taken together. This may blunt the response to iron therapy in patients with anemia, such as those with kidney disease.

Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici

Calcium acetate and Iron can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Calcium acetate belongs to Genitourinary; Iron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.

Livello di evidenza: Moderate

Perché avviene

Calcium competes with iron for intestinal uptake and forms poorly absorbed complexes.

Cosa fare

Separate oral iron from calcium acetate by at least 2 hours, and monitor hemoglobin and ferritin or transferrin saturation.
