Sintesi

Systemic corticosteroids such as cortisone raise blood glucose by promoting insulin resistance and hepatic glucose output. This can reduce the effectiveness of exenatide and worsen hyperglycemia.

Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici

Cortisone and Exenatide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Livello di evidenza: High

Perché avviene

Glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance and increased gluconeogenesis oppose the glucose-lowering action of exenatide (pharmacodynamic antagonism).

Cosa fare

Monitor blood glucose closely during corticosteroid therapy and after dose changes or withdrawal. Adjust the antidiabetic regimen as needed.

Cosa chiedere al farmacista

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
