Sintesi
Both products are GLP-1 receptor agonists (lixisenatide in the fixed-dose combination and exenatide), so combining them duplicates therapy without a proven added benefit. Gastrointestinal adverse effects, and hypoglycemia from the insulin component, may be increased.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Exenatide injectable and Insulin glargine-lixisenatide can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Perché avviene
Duplicate GLP-1 receptor agonist activity producing additive pharmacodynamic effects on insulin secretion, gastric emptying and appetite.
Cosa fare
Avoid using two GLP-1 receptor agonists together; choose a single agent and stop the duplicate. If the combination is unavoidable, monitor blood glucose and GI tolerability closely and reduce insulin as needed.
