Sintesi
Mecasermin is recombinant IGF-1 and itself causes hypoglycemia. Combined with a sulfonylurea, the glucose-lowering effect is additive and severe hypoglycemia may occur.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Gliclazide and Mecasermin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Gliclazide belongs to Endocrine; Mecasermin belongs to Endocrine.
Perché avviene
Additive pharmacodynamic hypoglycemic effects, as IGF-1 has insulin-like activity and gliclazide stimulates insulin secretion.
Cosa fare
Monitor blood glucose closely and consider reducing the gliclazide dose. Give mecasermin with or shortly after a meal and teach the patient to recognize and treat hypoglycemia.
