Sintesi
Mineral oil is a lipophilic, non-absorbable laxative that can dissolve fat-soluble drugs in the gut and carry them through unabsorbed. This could lower absorption of the oral contraceptive steroids and modestly reduce contraceptive reliability, although clinical data are limited.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Levonorgestrel oral / ethinylestradiol / ferrous bisglycinate and Mineral oil have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Perché avviene
Mineral oil may sequester lipophilic steroid hormones in the intestinal lumen and speed transit, reducing absorption.
Cosa fare
Avoid regular mineral oil use with oral contraceptives; if needed, take the contraceptive at least 2 hours before mineral oil. Counsel on missed-pill precautions if severe diarrhea occurs.
