Visão geral
Scalp psoriasis is psoriasis on the scalp and nearby skin such as the hairline and forehead; it is a chronic, immune-driven condition in which skin cells pile up as scaly plaques. The scalp is a common site in people with psoriasis. Overactivity of the immune system accelerates skin cell production, and flares can follow stress, certain medicines, smoking, alcohol, skin injury, infections, weather changes or diet. Features include fine scaling resembling dandruff or thick crusted plaques with itching and soreness; severe cases can cause temporary hair loss, and psoriatic arthritis may coexist. Diagnosis rests mainly on the appearance and location of the skin changes, with a biopsy only when unclear. The condition is lifelong and cannot be cured, but treatment can control it, using medicated shampoos containing salicylic acid or coal tar, topical steroids, vitamin D preparations, phototherapy, and oral or biologic medicines for severe cases.
Quando procurar um médico
Seek urgent care for a rapidly spreading rash with fever, a rash with blisters or peeling, or facial swelling. See a doctor for skin changes that do not improve with over-the-counter treatment after a few weeks, a mole that changes, or acne that is scarring or affecting your confidence. Call the local emergency number for any symptom that is sudden and severe. This page is a reference for healthcare professionals and does not replace an assessment.
