Platelet aggregation inhibitor; reversibly interacts with the platelet P2Y12 ADP-receptor to prevent signal transduction and platelet activation

Stroke: 250 mg PO q12hr with food

- Unknown Largely withdrawn (blood disorders); clopidogrel has replaced it. Animal studies at high doses showed no birth defects; human data are very limited. Avoid in pregnancy; if an antiplatelet is needed, clopidogrel or low-dose aspirin is preferred.

- Unknown Not known if it passes into milk; no LactMed record. The old US label advised stopping the drug or nursing. Because of its serious blood side effects (neutropenia, TTP), avoid while breastfeeding and use an alternative.

- Patients with lesions that have a propensity to bleed
- Due to risk of adverse hematologic events, for stroke prevention use only in ASA-intolerant patients
