Oral polio vaccine is live attenuated and in immunosuppressed patients can cause vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis. Immunosuppressive doses of hydrocortisone also reduce immune response.

Hydrocortisone and Poliovirus vaccine live oral trivalent are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Corticosteroid-induced immunosuppression permits prolonged replication of live attenuated poliovirus and reduces immunogenicity.
