Thyroid hormones act by controlling DNA transcription and protein synthesis. T3 and T4 diffuse into the cell nucleus and bind to thyroid receptor proteins attached to DNA, activating gene transcription and messenger RNA synthesis.

  • Not for treatment of obesity or for weight loss. In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening toxicity, particularly with sympathomimetic amines.
