Inhibits synthesis of thyroid hormone by blocking oxidation of iodine in thyroid gland; blocks synthesis of T4 and T3

Safe Small amounts pass into milk (about 0.025% of a 400 mg dose in 4 hours); clinically insignificant (US label). LactMed: methimazole is now preferred because of PTU liver injury, but no infant liver damage has been reported; limit to 450 mg daily if possible.

  • Discontinue in presence of unexplained fever, Interstitial pneumonitis may occur
