Drug interactions

albiglutide + sitagliptin

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Low

Sitagliptin and albiglutide both enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion through the incretin pathway, so using them together gives duplicated therapeutic action. Hypoglycemia is uncommon with this pairing alone but becomes more likely if a sulfonylurea or insulin is also taken. The combination offers little added benefit over either agent alone.

Mechanism of action

Additive pharmacodynamic effect, since a DPP-4 inhibitor and a GLP-1 receptor agonist both act on the incretin system.

Clinical management

Avoid routine combination of a DPP-4 inhibitor with a GLP-1 receptor agonist because of limited added benefit. If used together, monitor blood glucose and reduce any concurrent sulfonylurea or insulin dose.
