Summary

Calcium carbonate can raise urinary pH. Amantadine is eliminated mainly unchanged by the kidney, and its excretion falls in alkaline urine, so levels may rise. This could increase CNS or anticholinergic adverse effects, especially in older patients or those with renal impairment.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amantadine and Calcium carbonate have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Amantadine belongs to Anti Virals; Calcium carbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Urinary alkalinization reduces renal tubular excretion of amantadine, leading to accumulation.

What to do

Monitor for amantadine adverse effects such as confusion, hallucinations, dizziness and insomnia when regular high-dose calcium carbonate is used. Reduce the amantadine dose if toxicity appears.
