Summary
Calcium salts with alkalinizing effects may raise urinary pH. Amantadine is eliminated mainly unchanged by the kidney, and alkaline urine can reduce its excretion, so levels may rise. This could increase dose-related adverse effects such as confusion, hallucinations or dizziness.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amantadine and Calcium have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Amantadine belongs to Anti Virals; Calcium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Urinary alkalinization reduces renal tubular elimination of amantadine, a weak base, leading to accumulation.
What to do
No routine change is needed for typical doses. Watch for CNS adverse effects of amantadine in patients with renal impairment or on high-dose alkalinizing therapy, and reduce the dose if they occur.
