Summary
Albuterol can cause tachycardia, hypokalemia and QT changes, and amiodarone prolongs the QT interval. Together they may raise the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, mainly with high or systemic albuterol doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Amiodarone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with beta2-agonist-induced hypokalemia potentiating the effect.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and ECG in patients needing frequent albuterol. Use the lowest effective dose.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
