Summary
Heparin can suppress adrenal aldosterone production, and this effect adds to the potassium-retaining action of ACE inhibitors such as benazepril. Hyperkalemia may develop, particularly in patients with renal impairment, diabetes or other risk factors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-benazepril and Heparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-benazepril belongs to Cardiovascular; Heparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis combined with ACE inhibitor reduction of angiotensin II-driven aldosterone release leads to additive potassium retention.
What to do
Check serum potassium and creatinine at baseline and periodically during prolonged heparin therapy. Treat hyperkalemia or review the need for the ACE inhibitor if potassium rises.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
