Summary
At analgesic or anti-inflammatory doses, aspirin can blunt the antihypertensive effect of valsartan and reduce renal function, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Low-dose aspirin for cardiovascular prevention has much less effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-valsartan and Aspirin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Inhibition of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins by aspirin opposes ARB effects and reduces glomerular filtration.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, renal function and potassium if higher aspirin doses are used. Ensure adequate hydration; low-dose aspirin generally needs no change.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
