Summary
Synthetic angiotensin II is a vasopressor given to raise blood pressure in distributive shock, while valsartan blocks the AT1 receptor through which it acts. Valsartan may therefore blunt the pressor response to angiotensin II, and amlodipine adds vasodilation that opposes it.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-valsartan and Synthetic human angiotensin ii can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism at the angiotensin II type 1 receptor by valsartan, with additive vasodilation from amlodipine.
What to do
In patients receiving angiotensin II for shock, hold valsartan and amlodipine while hemodynamically unstable. Titrate vasopressor dose to blood pressure response.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
