Summary

Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, and thioridazine carries a particularly high risk of torsades de pointes. Combining them also adds anticholinergic and sedative effects, and thioridazine can raise amoxapine levels.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amoxapine and Thioridazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with thioridazine inhibiting CYP2D6 metabolism of amoxapine.

What to do

Avoid combining; choose an antidepressant with minimal QT effect. If previously combined, perform ECG and check electrolytes.
