Both drugs are nephrotoxic, and combined use increases the risk of acute kidney injury and electrolyte disturbance. Amphotericin-induced renal vasoconstriction and tubular injury add to cyclosporine afferent arteriolar constriction. Combination is sometimes unavoidable in transplant patients with serious fungal infection.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amphotericin b deoxycholate and Cyclosporin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity through renal vasoconstriction and direct tubular toxicity.
What to do
Avoid if possible, preferring a lipid amphotericin formulation or another antifungal; if used, monitor serum creatinine, potassium and magnesium frequently and check cyclosporine trough levels.
