Summary
Neuromuscular blockers can add to the paralytic effect of botulinum toxin. This may cause excessive muscle weakness, including at sites distant from the injection, with possible swallowing or breathing difficulty.
What this interaction means in plain words
Atracurium and Rimabotulinumtoxinb can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Atracurium belongs to Musculoskeletal; Rimabotulinumtoxinb belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive neuromuscular blockade, presynaptic inhibition of acetylcholine release by the toxin plus postsynaptic receptor blockade by atracurium.
What to do
Monitor for generalized weakness, dysphagia and respiratory compromise after botulinum toxin treatment when a neuromuscular blocker is used. Use reduced or titrated blocker doses with neuromuscular monitoring in recently treated patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
