Summary
Immunosuppression from basiliximab may blunt the immune response to dengue vaccination. Because the dengue vaccine is live attenuated, vaccination during significant immunosuppression also carries a risk of vaccine-related infection.
What this interaction means in plain words
Basiliximab and Dengue vaccine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Why it happens
Suppressed T-cell activation reduces vaccine response and may permit replication of the live attenuated virus.
What to do
Avoid live dengue vaccine in patients receiving basiliximab and defer vaccination until immunosuppression has resolved. Consider alternative preventive measures such as mosquito avoidance.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
