Summary
Basiliximab causes immunosuppression that can blunt the immune response to a live vaccinia vaccine and allow uncontrolled replication of the vaccine virus. This may cause progressive vaccinia or disseminated infection.
What this interaction means in plain words
Basiliximab and Smallpox vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Immunosuppression impairs vaccine immune response and permits replication of live attenuated virus.
What to do
Do not give live vaccinia vaccine to patients receiving basiliximab. Complete any needed live vaccination well before transplant immunosuppression where possible.
