Summary
Thiazide diuretics can raise blood glucose and reduce the effectiveness of antidiabetic therapy. Thiazides can also cause volume depletion, which may be relevant to canagliflozin because of its diuretic effect and to renal function with metformin.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bendroflumethiazide and Canagliflozin-metformin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Thiazides impair insulin secretion and glucose tolerance (partly via hypokalemia), opposing antidiabetic effects; additive volume depletion also occurs with SGLT2 inhibition.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose, renal function, electrolytes and volume status, and adjust the antidiabetic regimen if control worsens.
What to ask your pharmacist
