Summary

Thiazide diuretics can raise blood glucose and impair glycemic control, particularly at higher doses, offsetting the effect of chlorpropamide. Thiazides can also cause hyponatremia, and chlorpropamide may cause SIADH-like effects, so sodium may fall further.

What this interaction means in plain words

Bendroflumethiazide and Chlorpropamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic antagonism via thiazide-induced hypokalemia and reduced insulin secretion and sensitivity.

What to do

Monitor blood glucose and sodium after starting the thiazide. Increase the antidiabetic dose if needed.
