Summary

Scopolamine and benperidol, a butyrophenone antipsychotic, both have anticholinergic effects, so combined use can increase dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision, confusion and heat intolerance. Anticholinergics may also reduce the antipsychotic effect and add to sedation, particularly in older adults.

What this interaction means in plain words

Benperidol and Scopolamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive antimuscarinic activity and CNS depression; anticholinergic effects on gut motility may slightly alter oral antipsychotic absorption.

What to do

Monitor for anticholinergic toxicity, delirium and sedation, especially in elderly patients, and use the lowest effective doses. Reassess antipsychotic response if scopolamine is started.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
