For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Ibuprofen (NSAID) may diminish the antihypertensive effect of bisoprolol, potentially increasing blood pressure; effect more likely with chronic or high-dose NSAID use.
Mechanism of action
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis causes sodium/water retention and vasoconstriction, attenuating beta-blocker–mediated blood pressure lowering.
Clinical management
Avoid or minimize NSAID use; prefer acetaminophen or topical NSAIDs. If required, use lowest effective dose for the shortest duration and monitor BP (baseline and within 1–2 weeks). Check renal function if prolonged use or high risk.
