Drug interactions
bisoprolol + pseudoephedrine
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Sympathomimetic decongestant may blunt antihypertensive effect of bisoprolol and precipitate hypertension/tachycardia; risk of unopposed alpha-adrenergic stimulation at higher doses.
Mechanism of action
Pseudoephedrine alpha-/beta-adrenergic agonism opposes beta-1 blockade, reducing antihypertensive efficacy and potentially increasing BP/HR; possible unopposed alpha with beta-blockade.
Clinical management
Prefer to avoid oral pseudoephedrine; consider non-sympathomimetic alternatives (e.g., intranasal corticosteroid/antihistamine, saline). If needed, use lowest effective dose for shortest time and monitor BP/HR.
