Summary

Metyrapone blocks cortisol synthesis and is used in diagnostic tests and in Cushing's syndrome. Exogenous glucocorticoids suppress ACTH and cortisol and can confound test results, and they counteract the intended therapeutic effect.

What this interaction means in plain words

Budesonide and Metyrapone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Budesonide belongs to Respiratory; Metyrapone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic opposition: exogenous corticosteroid suppresses the HPA axis and supplies glucocorticoid activity that metyrapone is meant to reduce.

What to do

Avoid giving budesonide on the day of a metyrapone stimulation test if possible, and interpret results in light of steroid exposure. In treatment, monitor cortisol control and adjust dosing.

What to ask your pharmacist
