Summary

Metyrapone blocks cortisol synthesis and is used diagnostically and therapeutically, so exogenous glucocorticoids oppose its effect. Deflazacort also suppresses ACTH and may interfere with the interpretation of the metyrapone test.

What this interaction means in plain words

Deflazacort and Metyrapone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Metyrapone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Exogenous corticosteroid suppresses the pituitary-adrenal axis and provides glucocorticoid activity that offsets metyrapone's inhibition of 11-beta-hydroxylase.

What to do

Avoid corticosteroids before a metyrapone stimulation test unless adrenal insufficiency risk requires them. When metyrapone is used therapeutically, monitor cortisol and clinical response.

What to ask your pharmacist
