Summary
Buspirone given with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor has been associated with marked elevations in blood pressure. Selegiline at antidepressant transdermal doses inhibits both MAO isoenzymes, so the risk is relevant and buspirone labeling prohibits MAOI use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Buspirone and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition combined with buspirone's serotonergic and dopaminergic activity produces a pharmacodynamic effect leading to hypertensive reactions; the exact mechanism is not fully established.
What to do
Avoid concurrent use; allow a washout of at least 2 weeks after stopping an MAOI before starting buspirone, and the reverse for selegiline.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
