Summary
Heparin can suppress adrenal aldosterone synthesis and cause hyperkalemia, even at modest doses over several days. Together with candesartan the risk of raised potassium is greater, mostly in diabetes, renal impairment or acidosis.
What this interaction means in plain words
Candesartan and Heparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Candesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Heparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis adds to ARB blockade of angiotensin II-driven aldosterone effects.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients on prolonged heparin therapy and in those with renal impairment or diabetes.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
