Summary

Carboprost and oxytocin both stimulate uterine contraction, and used together their effects are potentiated. This is sometimes done deliberately for postpartum hemorrhage, but it raises the risk of uterine hypertonus and, before delivery, uterine rupture.

What this interaction means in plain words

Carboprost tromethamine and Oxytocin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive uterotonic effect through prostaglandin F2-alpha receptor and oxytocin receptor stimulation.

What to do

Use together only under obstetric supervision with continuous monitoring of uterine tone and fetal status where relevant. Avoid in the antepartum setting unless clearly indicated.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
