Summary

Aminoglycosides are nephrotoxic and ototoxic, and cephalosporins have occasionally been reported to add to renal injury when combined with them. Cefadroxil has little intrinsic nephrotoxicity, so the added risk is modest but matters in patients with reduced renal function. Both drugs are renally eliminated, so impairment raises exposure to each.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefadroxil and Kanamycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive renal tubular injury, with reduced renal clearance of both drugs when kidney function declines.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and aminoglycoside levels, and adjust doses to renal function. Ensure hydration and watch for hearing or balance changes.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
