Summary

Aminoglycosides such as kanamycin are nephrotoxic and ototoxic, and cephalosporins have occasionally been associated with additive renal injury when given alongside them. Cefixime is itself rarely nephrotoxic and is renally cleared, so reduced renal function may raise exposure to both drugs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefixime and Kanamycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Possible additive nephrotoxicity, with impaired renal function reducing clearance of both agents.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and urine output, and consider kanamycin levels and hearing or vestibular symptoms during therapy. Adjust doses to renal function and keep the patient well hydrated.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
