Summary

Selegiline is an MAO-B inhibitor that becomes nonselective at higher doses, and the transdermal form is used for depression. With cyclobenzaprine, there is a risk of serotonin syndrome and hypertensive crisis. The cyclobenzaprine label contraindicates use with MAO inhibitors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cyclobenzaprine and Selegiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Cyclobenzaprine belongs to Musculoskeletal; Selegiline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition combined with serotonergic and noradrenergic reuptake effects of cyclobenzaprine increases monoamine levels.

What to do

Do not combine, and avoid cyclobenzaprine within 14 days of stopping an MAO inhibitor. Use a non-serotonergic alternative for muscle spasm.
