Summary

Dabrafenib is a CYP3A4 and CYP2C8 substrate and itself an inducer. Dexamethasone may lower dabrafenib exposure, and dabrafenib may in turn reduce dexamethasone levels, potentially reducing efficacy of both.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dabrafenib and Dexamethasone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Dabrafenib belongs to Oncology; Dexamethasone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Dexamethasone induces CYP3A4 and dabrafenib induces CYP3A4, so each can accelerate the other's metabolism.

What to do

Monitor tumor response and adjust dexamethasone dose to clinical effect, for example when used for cerebral edema or antiemesis.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
