Summary

Deferasirox may modestly change efavirenz concentrations, but the effect is not well characterized. Deferasirox is itself reduced by inducers such as efavirenz via UGT induction, which may lessen iron chelation.

What this interaction means in plain words

Deferasirox and Efavirenz can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Deferasirox belongs to Miscellaneous; Efavirenz belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Efavirenz may induce UGT-mediated deferasirox glucuronidation, lowering chelator exposure; the reverse effect on efavirenz is uncertain.

What to do

Monitor serum ferritin and consider deferasirox dose increase if iron control worsens. Monitor virologic response and efavirenz tolerability.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
