Summary
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid that can raise blood glucose and therefore weaken the effect of glyburide. Patients may need more intensive diabetes treatment during glucocorticoid therapy, and hypoglycemia can follow when the steroid is reduced.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Glibenclamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Glibenclamide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism: glucocorticoids increase hepatic gluconeogenesis and induce insulin resistance.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose during deflazacort therapy and increase the glyburide dose or add other treatment if needed. Reassess the dose when the steroid is tapered or stopped.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
