Salicylates combined with a corticosteroid raise the risk of gastric irritation, ulceration and bleeding. Corticosteroids can also lower salicylate levels, and levels may rise when the steroid is withdrawn.

What this interaction means in plain words

Deflazacort and Salicylates can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive gastrointestinal mucosal injury, with possible corticosteroid-induced increase in salicylate clearance.

What to do

Consider gastroprotection with a proton pump inhibitor in at-risk patients and monitor for GI bleeding. Reassess salicylate response if deflazacort is stopped or its dose is changed.

What to ask your pharmacist
