Summary
Dengue vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, and corticosteroids at immunosuppressive doses can weaken the immune response and raise the risk of vaccine-related infection. Fludrocortisone at usual replacement doses has little immunosuppressive effect, so the concern applies mainly to higher cumulative corticosteroid exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dengue vaccine and Fludrocortisone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-mediated immunosuppression may reduce the immune response to the vaccine and permit replication of the live attenuated virus.
What to do
At replacement doses, vaccination is generally acceptable; if the patient also takes immunosuppressive glucocorticoid doses, defer the live vaccine according to the vaccine labeling.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
