dexamethasone + metamizole (dipyrone)

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Moderate

Metamizole induces CYP3A4/2B6 and may lower dexamethasone exposure; dexamethasone also induces CYP3A4 and may reduce metamizole active metabolite levels, decreasing steroid and analgesic effects.

Mechanism of action

Enzyme induction (CYP3A4 and CYP2B6) increases clearance of co-medications, reducing systemic concentrations.

Clinical management

Monitor clinical response to dexamethasone and analgesia; consider dose adjustment or use a non–enzyme-inducing analgesic if inadequate effect. Reassess after starting/stopping metamizole due to induction onset/offset over days.
