Summary
Corticosteroids and salicylates both can injure the gastrointestinal mucosa, so combined use raises the risk of gastric irritation, ulceration and bleeding. Corticosteroids may also lower salicylate levels and withdrawal can lead to salicylate toxicity.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexamethasone and Salicylates can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive gastrointestinal mucosal toxicity; corticosteroids also increase renal clearance of salicylates.
What to do
Consider gastroprotection with a proton pump inhibitor and monitor for GI bleeding symptoms. Watch salicylate levels or effects when dexamethasone is started or stopped.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
