Summary
Salsalate is a non-acetylated salicylate that, with corticosteroids, may increase the risk of gastrointestinal irritation and ulceration. Corticosteroids can also reduce serum salicylate concentrations.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexamethasone and Salsalate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive gastrointestinal mucosal toxicity, with increased salicylate clearance caused by corticosteroids.
What to do
Use gastroprotection in patients at risk for GI bleeding and monitor for abdominal pain or melena. Reassess salsalate dose when dexamethasone is started or withdrawn.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
