Summary

Both drugs promote potassium loss, so combined use can cause hypokalemia, which may lead to muscle weakness and cardiac arrhythmias. The risk is greater with high-dose or prolonged corticosteroid therapy and in patients taking digoxin or QT-prolonging drugs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dexamethasone and Xipamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Additive renal potassium wasting from the thiazide-like diuretic and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid activity.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium and magnesium regularly. Give potassium supplementation or a potassium-sparing agent if hypokalemia develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
